Fostering Community Growth Through Local Initiatives

Flint, Michigan, has long been a city of resilience and community spirit. In recent years, this spirit has manifested through various local initiatives aimed at revitalizing neighborhoods and improving the quality of life for residents.

University of Michigan-Flint’s Engage Flint Grant Program

The University of Michigan-Flint has introduced the Engage Flint Grant Program, designed to strengthen connections between the university and the local community. This program supports projects co-designed by university members and Flint residents, focusing on shared knowledge and addressing community-identified needs. Up to 12 projects will receive funding for the 2026–27 academic year, with individual awards supporting budgets of up to $12,000. Eligible projects include workshops, speaker series, and experiential learning opportunities that bring together students, faculty, staff, and community members to tackle issues important to Flint.

Mott Foundation’s Commitment to Community Vitality

The Charles Stewart Mott Foundation continues to play a pivotal role in Flint’s development. Their Community Vitality program supports efforts to ensure Flint is a vibrant place where people want to live, learn, work, and play. This includes connecting residents to a robust network of community centers, parks, and play spaces, as well as fostering the development of healthy children and communities through youth sports and play. Additionally, the foundation supports community safety efforts to prevent crime and address residents’ needs.

Resident-Led Neighborhood Improvement Projects

In a significant move to empower local residents, the Mott Foundation has allocated over half a million dollars in grants to support 37 resident-led projects across Flint. These projects encompass neighborhood cleanups, beautification of community gathering spaces, yoga and poetry in the park, sidewalk repairs, and more. By investing in these grassroots initiatives, the foundation aims to create visible change and foster a sense of ownership and pride among residents.

Invisible Giants Legacy & Leadership Foundation

Another notable organization making strides in the community is the Invisible Giants Legacy & Leadership Foundation. Comprised of professionals from various sectors, this 501(c)(3) organization provides quality-of-life programming in education, recreation, and sports to enhance the lives of Flint’s youth and adults. Their mission is to educate and provide the community with programs in arts, culture, education, and sports, aiming to create and implement initiatives that benefit the Flint community.

Flint Development Center’s Multifaceted Services

The Flint Development Center serves as a multi-purpose facility offering a range of key community resources. These include activities for senior citizens, youth summer camps, physical fitness programs, arts and culture events, on-the-job training, and entrepreneurial assistance.
